STATION HISTORY:

2340 Grand & 2020 Old Alvin

Fire Station 1 was originally located at 2340 Grand Boulevard at Broadway in a 1-bay small, white building that used to serve as a vehicle maintenance shop. Some years later, Station 1 got a big upgrade and moved to 2020 Old Alvin Road at Orange St. Station 1 was now a 6-bay firehouse with a small living area that had one office, a large utility closet (later converted into a secretary office) and a firehouse table. It housed many units throughout its years, from the first ladder truck Pearland ever bought to the Antique pumper purchased in 1946 when the Volunteer department was established.

In 2007, Pearland hired the first 18 full-time career members in the history of the department. With that hiring came much change, including the Station 1 remodel. Three of the south-end bays were walled off and converted into dorm rooms, a living area, kitchen, and restroom/shower. The original office/living area was converted into 2 large offices/dorms for officers (Lieutenant and Battalion Chief) and a gym with a restroom/shower.

1571 Old Alvin

In 2017, construction began for a new firehouse at the corner of Old Alvin and McHard. In 2019, personnel and equipment moved into the new house, located at 1571 Old Alvin, and the new Fire Station 1 went live. This station's improvements focused on hazards that firefighters are subjected to after responding to a fire-- namely carcinogens related to over 60% of cancer found in firefighters with cancers today. To reduce risk of exposure to carcinogens, the firehouse maintains a “clean” side and “dirty” side, as well as the City's first ever firefighter decontamination area. In decontamination, firefighters can clean off bio hazards and take a shower after a fire to help decrease exposure and help reduce risk of cancer.

In addition to the decontamination area, this firehouse includes:

  • The largest fire department gym built to date at date of construction with state of the art equipment
  • A Purvis alerting system
  • 8 individual dorms with large lockers to keep uniforms, bedding and other essentials
  • Easy-to-clean stainless steel counters to help from cross-contaminating food
  • Gear washer and dryer
  • Closed off Bunker Gear storage area to keep the gear out of the sun and exhaust from the apparatuses that ultimately breaks it down.
