Station History:

Originally located at 8333 Freedom Drive in the city’s midtown area, Fire Station No. 4 was built by the City's volunteer fire department in 2002. Initially designed to be a 2-story house with slide poles to the bay floor, an unforeseen construction flaw kept the 2nd floor project from happening. At the time, the firehouse had 3 100’ long bays, a dorm room, restrooms, small kitchen (measuring 30 sq feet), living area and office all segmented and separated, with no hallways in the house. This was also the first firehouse in the PFD that shared a location and staffing with Pearland EMS.

In 2007 Pearland hired the first 18 full-time career members in the history of the department. With that hiring came much change which also led to the station's remodel, which consisted of walling off approximately 80’ of the first bay to make 6 dorm rooms, small laundry room and a report office. Walls were removed from the remaining rooms, converting the space into a larger kitchen (60 sqft), 2 dorms, 4 restrooms with 2 showers and 2 offices. For several years after the remodel, firehouse 4 was known as Headquarters, because it housed a Ladder company, medic unit, brush truck, Tender, hazardous materials trailer, safety house, high water boat, the executive assistant, and the fire chief. Eventually, the Executive Assistant and the Fire Chief would move to what is now HQ-- the David L. Smith Fire Administration Building-- at 2703 Veterans. The Battalion Chief and EMS Captain would inhabit those 2 empty offices at Station 4.

In 2021, construction began for a new firehouse 4 and another remodel of the old firehouse 4 into a large gym and Police Academy complex for Pearland Police Department. The new Station 4 opened in April 2022 and, like many of our newer stations, focus on some of the hazards firefighters see today after responding to a fire, namely reducing risk of exposure to carcinogens that are related to over 60% of cancer found in firefighters through a dedicated  “clean” side and “dirty” side.

Station 4 features:

  • firefighter decontamination area
    • two saunas (so firefighters can clean off biohazards and shower to decrease risk of exposure)
      • The station's saunas are programmed with a process that truly decontaminates the firefighters' skin.
    • 3M Solo Rescue decon machine for SCBA’s, Boots, Gloves, helmets, and hoods
  • Purvis alerting system
  • 10 individual dorms with large lockers to keep uniforms, bedding, and other essentials
  • Accordion folding bay doors
    • to lower the maintenance needed on regular garage style bay doors
  • Large watch office
    • where a firefighter is assigned to “keep watch" by greeting residents, announcing arrival of other members or dignitaries, and ensuring that the crew catches information on dispatch runs
  • Gear washer and dryer
  • Closed-off Bunker Gear storage area
    • to keep the gear out of the sun and exhaust from the apparatuses that ultimately breaks it down.

Old Fire Station 4 to be Repurposed as Public Safety Complex Training Center

The original fire station 4 building is in design phase for a complete remodel to serve as the Pearland Police Department's Training Academy. The Training Center, centrally located in Pearland, will be a hub featuring classrooms, offices, and weight room, outdoor turf field, and a Purvis Alerting System.

While the center will be the future home of the Pearland Police Department's Training Academy, the facility will be open to all Pearland Public Safety personnel, including the police department and fire department, for use for ongoing training and physical exercise. PFD and PPD aim to be public safety trendsetters in the area with the shareable space designed to accommodate the departments' common needs.
