City of Pearland retains Tree City USA Certification
The City of Pearland is dedicated to preserving, enhancing, and sustaining the public’s urban trees and that outstanding work has been highlighted with the City’s Tree City USA recertification. Tree City USA is an Arbor Day Foundation program designed to improve and highlight the importance of urban tree canopies.
By once again achieving a Tree City USA certification, Pearland continues to show its dedication to providing the very best community to live and grow in. 2017 marks the 8th year of achieving such a certification. A healthy urban canopy provides many benefits to the community including cleaning air, cleaning water, stabilizing soil, increasing property value, providing shade, providing wildlife habitat, and beautifying the community.
To be a certified Tree City USA community, four fundamental components must be met:
1. A Tree Board or Department must be developed,
ensuring someone is legally responsible for management of all trees on city owned property.
2. A Tree Care Ordinance must be enacted to set standards for tree plantings, removal, and management.
3. A Community Forestry Program must include an annual budget of at least $2 Per Capita to ensure the commitment to tree health and management by showing the City’s investment into its urban canopy.
4. An Arbor Day Observance and Proclamation must be issued to provide the opportunity to celebrate and educate citizens of the benefits trees provide to a community.
