Construction on Tom Reid Library set to begin
Pearland City Council approved a $3.3 million construction contract for the Tom Reid Library Project. The contractor has submitted a schedule which takes into account the requests made by the City to keep the library open and accessible to the public for the May 6 election cycle as well as the library’s summer reading program with concludes on Aug. 15.
The project includes the addition and renovation of the existing Tom Reid Library. An approximate 8,560 square foot addition will be added to the northwest side of the building. This addition will enlarge the stack areas in the children’s, adult and teen areas, increase office space for staff, increase the lounge seating, provide new computer desk areas, check out kiosks, help desks, additional restroom facilities, storage and building support rooms.
Interior finishes and lighting will be added to include: wall and floor finishes, new LED lighting throughout the new and existing spaces and parking lot, new ceiling tile and ceiling grid. A new chiller system will be installed to serve the entire facility which replaces the existing HVAC system. Exterior renovations include refurbishing the metal members of the entrance canopy, replacement of "Tom Reid Library" lettering on the building, a new dumpster enclosure and minor parking area modifications.
A pre-construction meeting will be held to coordinate details with Brazoria County Library staff. This initial coordination meeting will be the first of many to ensure a successful partnership and spirit of cooperation with the library and its staff to minimize the impact of the construction on the services they provide to the public.
The project complies with the Council Strategic Priorities of Sustainable Infrastructure, Fiscally Responsible Government and Engaged Community. By procuring this project through the competitive sealed proposal process the City staff is ensuring that the public funds are being spent on a quality product performed by qualified contractors. There are two libraries in the City including the Tom Reid Library and the Westside Library located on Business Center Drive. The two Pearland libraries are the highest in the Brazoria County network in terms of circulation. The project is part of the bonds approved by Pearland voters for wide variety of Capital Improvement Projects.
