tom-reid-library-ext-cropped-squareWork on the $4.5 million Tom Reid Library Renovation project continues, with areas around the facility now cleared of any and all obstructions and debris. Excavation of the detention pond at the rear of the property has commenced and the foundation for the facility’s proposed expanded areas has been completed.

Contractors have begun erecting the structural steel frame work for the expansion areas and have also finished installing a sanitary sewer line and fire truck turnaround on-site. The expansion of Tom Reid Library will increase the now 20,584 square feet building by an additional 8,174 square feet. The expansion will create new areas in the library such as a bookstore, children’s storytime room, teen zone, computer labs and additional office/ storage space. The renovation will also include the replacement of 3 HVAC units in the facility. Complete closure of the library is scheduled after the conclusion of the Summer Reading Program in mid-August. The library will remain closed until substantial completion is reached in April 2018.

The Pearland Tom Reid Library will also be closing for renovation and expansion to meet the needs of the growing community and high demand from patrons at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 12. Starting Aug.14, patrons will be able to pick up holds and drop off books at the library’s temporary location near the tax office at 2341 Galveston Avenue, Pearland. The site will be staffed Monday-Wednesday 10-7; Thursday-Friday 9-6; and Saturday 10-6, and will include a small browsing collection. There is also an external book drop available at the site. For more information regarding the closure, view our previous article here.

The project is part of the Pearland City Council Strategic Priorities of Sustainable Infrastructure, Fiscally Responsible Government and Engaged Community. By procuring this project through the competitive sealed proposal process the City staff is ensuring that the public funds are being spent on a quality product performed by qualified contractors.

There are two libraries in the City including the Tom Reid Library and the Westside Library located on Business Center Drive. The two Pearland libraries are the highest in the Brazoria County network in terms of circulation. The project is part of the bonds approved by Pearland voters for wide variety of Capital Improvement Projects
