Smith Ranch Road Extension plans advance to next step
Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) recently approved the roadway alignment plans to the Smith Ranch Road Widening project as they were presented in the public meeting in February. Now that approval has been granted, the Right of Way acquisition may begin along with the environmental planning and the preliminary engineering report.
The $6.9 million project includes the expansion of Smith Ranch Road from a two-lane asphalt roadway to a four-lane concrete divided roadway with curb and gutter, raised medians, drainage, sidewalks and landscaping. The project extends from north of FM 518 to Hughes Ranch Road.
This construction will take place within the existing roadway alignment of Smith Ranch Road with additional right-of-way required. The purpose of the project is to improve mobility and connections of the existing roadway for future projected traffic growth by providing a continuous four-lane roadway and a shared use path. In addition, the project would enhance overall safety, in accordance with the City’s Major Thoroughfare Plan, by converting narrow asphalt lanes with roadside ditches into a concrete curb and gutter roadway with medians. Construction is anticipated to begin in the first quarter of 2019 with a duration of approximately one year.
The City of Pearland, in conjunction with the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) held a public meeting in February to inform residents of the proposed Smith Ranch Road Widening Project. A web page was set up on the City’s website to keep the public informed of updates on the project including a schematic of the planned project as well as information that was available at the public meeting.
