City Council has approved two contracts associated with Phase 1 of the Independence Park Project, in the amount of $690,000. The contracts will allow the purchase and construction of an event stage, and stage building and installation of a new inclusive playground.

Independence Park was substantially closed in May 2017 for the initiation of Phase 1, which includes the reorientation of the park entrance, landscaping, relocation and replacement of the existing playground, construction of additional parking and the construction of an amphitheater for a public gathering space for arts, culture, and entertainment to increase visitor interest. Construction for this project is expected to conclude in Fall 2018. Park users will still have access through the Liberty Drive access point, with a road block at the park bridge, so trails may still be utilized by residents. The dog park will remain open through a temporary entrance off of Pearland Parkway. The rest of the park is closed to the public, including the basketball court pavilion and pool.
