City staff recently completed the installation of a new communications system for the expansive water and wastewater systems across the City. The new communications system significantly improves bandwidth, redundancy & connection reliability, allowing water production and wastewater treatment facilities to communicate with technicians through the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system. This communications system provides several improvements which include enhanced security, infrastructure compatibility and real-time monitoring as well as allowing for expansion as the City continues to grow.
Up until having this new basis for transmitting information, the City of Pearland Public Works Department had depended upon radio telemetry. The communication supports a SCADA system at the City’s water production and wastewater treatment facilities to monitor the operations, ensuring the delivery of these vital service to City’s customers. These needed upgrades were implemented to improve connectivity between these production facilities and the operations team to ensure the continuation of such critical services to residents.
Additional advantages of the new communications system are to ensure that all facilities are operational and functioning properly when staff cannot reach those facilities due to high water or debris. This project is in line with the Pearland City Council Strategic Priority of Sustainable Infrastructure.
