The $4.2 million Fite Road Extension Project, which will extend the road approximately 2,500 feet, continues to make progress, and is now expected to be complete in early 2018. The project includes the construction of a four-lane undivided concrete roadway with curb and gutter, a 10 foot high soundwall on the north side, landscaped right of ways, underground drainage and a traffic signal at the intersection with McLean Road. This extension will reduce the amount of traffic currently being diverted to Walnut Street – a primarily residential area. The completion of this extension will allow traffic to continue on Fite Road beyond its current endpoint, connect McLean Road and Veterans Drive and provide access to the new portion of Centennial Park and the ball fields there.

In September 2017, the results of a routine quality assurance survey showed that the roadway alignment and drainage system deviated from its planned path due to a survey error in the contractor’s initial project setup. As a result, construction slowed while the contractor worked to develop a solution to the issue. In October 2017, an agreeable solution was agreed to by the City, which involved the relocation of all appropriate drainage structures txo their proper location and building the concrete roadway per the proposed design plans. All relocation activities involved in this solution will be completed at the contractor’s expense.

This project was one of nine projects submitted for federal/state funding to the Houston Galveston Area Council's Call for Projects in 2012, as part of the Transportation Improvement Program. It was one of four Pearland projects to receive funding. As such, the project will include 80 percent federal funds reimbursed through the Texas Department of Transportation with a 20 percent local match.
