Tom Reid Library officially reopens

Post Date:05/29/2018 9:17 a.m.
On Saturday May 12, City of Pearland and Brazoria County Library staff, surrounded by elected officials, business owners and eager residents, officially reopened the Tom Reid Library. The $4.5 million project to renew and improve the facility finished in early 2018, with inspections and additional maintenance completed in the months leading up to the grand opening.

Deputy City Manager Jon Branson kicked off the grand reopening by briefly exploring the immense value of libraries and their impact on the communities, going on to quote Albert Einstein, who said “The only thing that you absolutely have to know, is the location of the library.” Mayor Tom Reid declared that “A city with a library is a great city, a city without one has got some problems.” City Manager Clay Pearson, who also spoke, said “literacy is the key to learning and success and this is a place that can support that. It's a place to learn and explore what you want to know.”

The improvement project saw the addition of 8,500 sq.ft. added to the existing 11,000 sq.ft. This addition allowed for the enlargement of the stack areas in the children’s, adult and teen areas, increased office space for staff, increased lounge seating, new room for desks, check out kiosks, help desks and additional restrooms. The layout of the library was also restructured to make spaces more open and inviting. A new chiller system was also installed to serve the entire facility which replaced the existing HVAC system. Exterior renovations included refurbishing the entrance canopy, replacement of the "Tom Reid Building" lettering on the building, a new dumpster enclosure and minor parking area modifications. As a result of the stellar work of city staff and contractors, the project was able to be completed under budget.

This project complied with the Council Strategic Priorities of Sustainable Infrastructure, Fiscally Responsible Government and Engaged Community. There are two libraries in the City including the Tom Reid Library and the Westside Library located on Business Center Drive. The two Pearland libraries are the highest in the Brazoria County network in terms of circulation. The project is part of the bond package approved by Pearland voters for a wide variety of Capital Improvement Projects
