Bailey Road to Host New Traffic Signal Pilot Program

Post Date:08/06/2019 4:57 pm

The City of Pearland’s exponential growth has led to an increased demand for transportation alternatives. In response, the City will implement a pilot program for a new traffic signal system along the Bailey Road Corridor.

The pilot program will be applied to assess the capability of the new software and hardware and its abilities to improve intersection functionality and ease of maintenance along the Veterans, McLean, Manvel, and Harkey intersections on Bailey Road.

The new equipment, provided by Trafficware, is reputed to provide additional data and analytics with the intent of reducing traffic delay, reduce emergency response time, and provide increased intersection functionality. The pilot program will determine whether the new traffic signal software is able to effectively reduce traffic delays, improve intersection level of service, and provide additional functionality.

In addition, the City will be able to participate in cost-saving measures by utilize existing hardware, including the current vehicle detection camera system and stock equipment, as the City transitions through the system.

If the pilot program proves effective, the new traffic system would be applied to all applicable corridors within the City. The installation would take place over the next 5-10 years, subject to budget availability.

Trafficware will provide the software for the pilot program at no cost; hardware will cost $89,619.50, which will be funded by the Bailey Road construction project. Bid for installation of the equipment is expected to begin in August.

The move to upgrade the traffic system aligns with the City of Pearland’s sustainable infrastructure strategic priority. Public infrastructure provides the foundation upon which the Pearland community is built. Providing sustainable infrastructures ensures the effective growth, support and maintenance of the city.
