In March of 2020, Adventures with Edu-Katie (AWEK), an environmental education video series created by City of Pearland premiered. Since March 2020, four episodes have been released on Facebook and YouTube, with a combined total of over 4,500 views. Topics for the four episodes are: Migratory Birds, Benefits of Nature, Baby Animals 101, and How to Be Plastic Free. Each episode contains a conservation message, how to get involved, entertaining fun facts and information, and vibrant and inviting graphics that capture the attention of children and families online.
In September of 2020, AWEK - Episode 2: Benefits of Nature, was entered into the 3rd Annual Wild About Houston Green Film Festival (WAHGFF), which is an event within the Houston Green Film Series (HGFS). The HGFS is a series of film screening events from the Houston and Gulf Coast Region that bring awareness to environmental issues through visual arts by presenting films with an environmental focus to the Houston community.
In years past, the WAHGFF took place on one night, but due to the number and quality of submissions in 2020, the screening was split into a two-night event, featuring over 40 different films. These films all showcased environmental stories from the Houston and Gulf Coast Region, highlighting the work of environmental organizations that inspire viewers to make a difference in the environment and their quality of life.
After the conclusion of the WAHGFF, citizens and film viewers are encouraged to vote for the best film per category. When the voting was completed on December 2, 2020, Adventures with Edu-Katie was selected as the Fan Favorite! The winners will be shown during the Wild and Scenic Film Festival (WASFF) Tour in January 2021.
The WASFF will take place on January 29, 2021. Tickets to this virtual experience can be found online through the Citizen’s Environmental Coalition website. The Adventures with Edu-Katie Series will continue in 2021. Viewers can watch previous videos and stay up to date with upcoming videos by following the Delores Fenwick Nature Center on Facebook.
