As we strive to continue to keep our community safe, and reopen in a responsible manner, guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), as well as the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) have been the basis direction. Social Distancing remains our most effective tool in the fight against the COVID-19 illness. In a press conference held on April 17th, Governor Abbott announced plans to reopen many things, among them parks.
In an effort to align our local efforts with those of the Governor’s office (https://tpwd.texas.gov/newsmedia/releases/?req=20200420a), and his advisors at the DSHS, we are posting the same guidelines that include:
- Wearing face coverings or masks
- Maintaining a distance of at least 6 feet (for those who are not in the same household)
- Visitors may be in groups no larger than five
In recognition of community spaces within the parks and trail systems where the minimum recommended social distancing may not be possible, the CDC recommends using simple cloth face coverings (or masks) when in public to help slow the spread of the virus. https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/prevent-getting-sick/diy-cloth-face-coverings.html
Per the CDC a cloth face covering should be worn whenever people are in a community setting, especially in situations where you may be near people. The exceptions to this guideline are: children younger than 2 years of age, anyone who has trouble breathing, or is unconscious, incapacitated or otherwise unable to remove the cover without assistance.
The City continues to work with local, state, and national health authorities to provide you with the best practices and guidelines to keep yourself, your families, and your community healthy. As the situation continues to evolve, we will monitor and share the recommendations.
