The Special Weapons and Tactics Unit of the Pearland Police Department was formed in 1992. Officers assigned to this unit have responded to many high-risk situations in the cities of Pearland, Alvin, League City, Brookside Village, Friendswood and Manvel. The S.W.A.T. unit responds to hostage situations, high-risk warrant service, protection details, as well as persons in crisis who may be threatening suicide.

The unit is made up of two teams, tactical operations and crisis negotiations. Each plays a vital role in accomplishing the objective, which is to peacefully resolve the situation with as little damage to property, injury, or loss of life as possible. The tactical unit provides security, containment and rescue for the scene.

The Crisis Negotiations team is made up of seven members. These officers are highly skilled and trained in the art of negotiations. They must maintain certification by continuously completing trainings and conduct field exercises involving long periods of time on telephone negotiations. The negotiators have performed duties regarding suicidal subjects, barricaded subjects, and call and surrender for high risk warrants.

The entire unit is under the direction of the S.W.A.T. commander, along with assistant commanders from tactical and negotiations. This command staff, with input from team leaders, makes administrative decisions regarding deployment, tactics and training.
