The City is upgrading to an Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) system from the existing drive-by automated meter reading (AMR) system. This upgrade is part of an investment in infrastructure and the future, as the current system is nearing the end of the expected service life. The new AMI system will improve the accuracy and information available related to water service, with an added benefit of customer-facing data which will improve transparency and empower residents to take control of their water usage.

This project is funded by the Drinking Water State Revolving Fund through the EPA, administered by the Texas Water Development Board.

What are we doing?

This is a project to upgrade the City's current water meter system from an analog drive-by Automated Meter Reading (AMR) system to a digital Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) system.

Why are we doing this? 

The City's current water meter system is aging and needs to be replaced. This new system will improve water service by leveraging technology.

How long will it take?

The project started in April 2019 and will take 18-20 months to complete.

What should we expect?

Before work begins in a neighborhood, advanced notice will be sent out via website, social, email, and door hangers. Installers with Official City of Pearland badges on their truck or person, accompanied by Pearland Public Works employees, will begin swapping out meters. Each meter takes about 15 minutes to install, so water downtime should be minimal.

Will they need to come inside?

No, all work will be completed outside of the home at the meter box.

How do the meters work?

The new meters will have a radio enabled transmitter attached to them that will transmit usage data to the central database. That information will then be accessible through a web portal.
