The organization and legal Authority for the Building Code Board of Adjustments and Appeals is found in Section 108 of the Southern Standard Building Code Congress International Standard Building Code. The Board is composed of seven (7) Board members and two alternate members and consists of individuals with knowledge and experience in technical codes, such as design professionals, contractors or building industry representatives. The alternate members consist of one member at large from the building industry and one member at large from the public. The terms of Board members shall be staggered so no more than ½ of the Board is appointed or replaced in any twelve-month period. The two alternates serve one-year terms. A simple majority of the Board members must be present before the Board can hear and decide cases.

The Building Code Board of Adjustments and Appeals has one fundamental duty:

To hear appeals of decisions and interpretations of the building official and consider variances of the technical codes.
