The organization and legal Authority for the Gas and Plumbing Code Board of Adjustments and Appeals is found in Section 109 of the Southern Standard Building Code Congress International Standard Plumbing Code. The Board is composed of five (5) Board members and two (2) alternate members. The five members should consist of one registered design professional who is a registered architect or a building or superintendent of building construction with at least ten years of experience; one registered design professional with structural engineering or architectural experience; one registered design professional with mechanical and plumbing engineering experience; or a mechanical and plumbing contractor with at least ten years of experience, one registered design professional with electrical engineering experience; or an electrical contractor with at least ten years of experience; and one registered design professional with fire protection engineering experience or a fire protection contractor with at least ten years experience. The alternate members consist of individuals who possess the qualifications required for Board membership. The terms of the Board members and the two alternates are five years. A simple majority of the Board members must be present before the Board can hear and decide cases.

The Gas and Plumbing Code Board of Adjustments and Appeals has one fundamental duty:

To hear appeals of decisions and interpretations of the building official and consider variances of the technical codes.
